How far north was lee intending to go in his 2 expeditions north of the Potomac and how long did he intend to stay.

He planned on meeting the Union Army and defeating the Union Army hoping it would end the war.

I wonder how far he was willing to go to meet them and how long was he willing to stay to do it. If for example they had tried to draw him further north was there a point he would judge too far.
