I am looking for information on the 47th NC infantry. Mostly on Co. I .

William Thomas George, 47th co I-2nd great grandfather
Augustus George, 47th co I-2nd great grand uncle
McRae George, 47 co I-2nd great grand uncle
Lewis Anderson, 47th Co I-2nd great grand uncle
Joseph J. Hopson, 47th Co I-2nd great grand uncle
Perry Whitley, 47th Co A-3rd great grand uncle
James H. Nowell, 47th Co F-3rd great grandfather

I have other ancestors that also served in other infantries in NC and VA. Any help will be appreciated. My goal is to find where McRae George may be buried, if known. He was wounded at Gettysburg on the 3 July and died on 5 July.

Thanks in advance

If you are not familiar with the North Carolina Troops 1861-1865 volumes and already check them, I recommend going to your library. Most likely, they are in the reserve section and cannot be checked out so you would have to do your research there. They would give the soldiers you listed service records, but probably not where they are buried.

I have the volumes in my library and could help you out with their records if you wish, but you would probably find it more rewarding to go to the library and read them first hand.

Thanks for the quick response. I ran across volume XI that contains the 45th-48th and was able to purchase it fairly reasonably at a flea market in Dillard, GA of all places. The preface in the book talks about compiling the information from original sources. Would you know where these original sources may be located? I have often thought that if I could find original documents, they would be able to tell me a little more info.

Check page IX of the Introduction to Volume XI. The best bet for you would be the North Carolina Division of Archives and History in Raleigh. I was there about 20 years ago and going through all that microfilm was something of a pain, but there is a lot of information there. I would call first, they may have something better now.

Here is some Battle Flags of the 47th NC

Wow. That's what I get for not reading all the material. I hate to admit that I am a skimmer of pages. In reference to group 109 envelopes at the National Archives, what do the numbers listed under card numbers represent? I assume they represent a reference to the original documents used in the compilation.

47th NC Reg. History: http://www.civilwarindex.com/armync/reghist/47th_nc_infantry_reghist.pdf
Good account of the 1st-3rd of July 63, including where and why they took their largest losses.
47th NC Reg. Roster: http://www.civilwarindex.com/armync/soldiers/47th_nc_infantry_soldiers.pdf

Best of luck with your search. When I get a few minutes Ill be happy to check for official enlistment, Muster and Receipt rolls, etc. for your family members.
Thank you M. Warren. This will be a big help.

I do. Thanks. I have volume 11 of series that shows the 46-49 Infantry. I am hoping to dig further, but not sure where to start. Most of what I have is from on-line and a few library trips. I have been to Archives in Washington, but did not have time to search or investigate much. Also, I can go to the NC Archives in Raleigh, NC. Both places are a bit intimidating and overwhelming.

In case you didnt already know, Augustus George is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond Va.

There is also a Presley George of the 30th NC buried at Hollywood

I do not know where the remains of NC soldiers returned for burial were reinterred, but quite a number of Georgians were returned and reinterred at Savannah. Im sure there is a NC cemetery where returned Confederates were reinterred? Maybe someone who knows will post. Sorry I cant be more help.

I also found a newspaper article here http://newspaperarchive.com/us/north-carolina/raleigh/weekly-standard/1863/11-04/ which includes the name Wm T George - possibly a list of killed/wounded - but I do not have a subscription so cant access the article.

My guess would be something along those lines but I really don't know.
