No headstone

Most of my ancestors are buried near me and I visit the cemetery off and on. The brother of my direct ancestor had a brother in the Civil War. I have always wondered shy he never got a military headstone. Then again my dad and his brother were in the Navy during World War Two and neither of them have a military headstone. I kind of suspect I will not get a military headstone either.

This makes me wonder what percentage of service men or Civil War veterans have military headstones.

I can ask the VA for a headstone... They are free... I have a Gr Gr uncle who died in the Civil war and is buried in Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery. He has no headstone but the cemetery told me the VA would make a headstone for him for free but I would have to pay the cemetery to install it...

So my dad could get a military headstone but I would have to pay to have it installed? Well I am not so sure I want to have my daughters have to pay for putting in a headstone even if the government pays for the headstone itself. Once I am in the ground I will not be able to do much about not having a military headstone anyway.

The cemetery was only going to charge me 100 dollars to install the headstone. I thought that was reasonable.

Not sure I can do the for a great grandfather's brother. I am not a direct descendent. Might do for my dad but not sure he would have cared. I think it was 5 years of his life he would just as soon forget. he did get to see the Philippines out of the deal.
