The cookbook, "Nights Before Christmas Cook Book" was published by Visitors Council, Madison Area Chamber of Commerce Madison., Indiana in 1986. I obtained it in 1995 when we took the Candlelight Tour of Historic Places and Homes in Madison, Indiana. It is full of delightful recipes both old and new for the holidays.

Some of my favorites are Onion Wine Soup, Lanier Family Egg-Nog Recipe, Potato Stuffing, , Kentucky Jam Cake,, Sally Lunn from about 1770, Nantucket Cake from 1674, Potato Candy and Skillet Cookies.

It is full of trivia about Christmas also. These include:

In 1224, St. Francis of Assisi set up a manager scene with real animals and live people. Though life-size, the Christ Child was made of wax. Italy called the manager scene 'presepe'.

Louis Prang in Roxbury, Massachusetts, printed the first Christmas cards in United States in 1874.

Dr. Clement Moore of New York City wrote "A Visit from St. Nicholas" which was sent to the "Sentinel" in Troy, New York and published in December, 1823 by a family friend.

Jack Horner's Christmas pie was mince pie. He put in his thumb and pulled "out a plum". But there were no plums.

Have a Merry Christmas.

Louis Prang is awesome- have a thread here somewhere on Prang cards, will dig it up tomorrow, if I remember. Out of time!

Must look into this cook book- or maybe not. It would be too tempting- and really, really do not need one more!
