Next month I'll be taking a week off of work to celebrate having Commencement at school. Not graduating completely, there was issues with what the school registrar told me I had to do class wise so there's one more class I'm having to take for summer, but it's the last thing trip-wise I can do before my fiancé become my wife, so there ya go!

I've narrowed it down to four possibilities for what I can do, and I'd like people opinions on them.

Pennsylvania: I'd be flying into Philadelphia. The cost of the plane ticket is going to be cheapest since I have an airline credit that will either cover the entire plane trip or be only $60 that's I'd pay out of pocket (if I do 5 days free, 6 days the extra money).

Doing this gives me the most amount of states I can visit (New Jersey, Penn and Maryland). Most amount of wars I can visit. It potentially involves the most amount of wars I could visit, (1812, CW and Revolution). I've never been to any 1812 sites so that'd be great.

My plan is to just do public transportation and Uber here, since the consensus is that traffic in this part of the country is at its worst and if you aren't a native you should avoid driving.

Since I'd just going to be doing public transit and Uber though, I won't be able to hit Gettysburg and what Civil War sites I will be hitting will only happen if I add Washington D.C. as a day trip and focus exclusively on Fort Stevens, Ford's Theater and the African American Civil War Museum).

Virginia: I'd fly into Dulles as it's much cheaper than Richmond or any other large airport there.

Obviously the most amount of Civil War battles I can visit. I can revisit the battlefields I visited as a 12 year right after 9/11 and be able to appreciate them more fully as an adult and being by myself. Like Spotslyvania, all we did was pull up to the entrance where the Sedgwick monument is, take a picture and drive off. I also seem to clock myself at 2 battlefields a day, so in an 5 full day trip I could hit 10.

The only drawback is that there is so much that I want to see Civil War-wise that I'd basically have to pick and choose which ones aren't going to make it, which is a very sad process.

Georgia: I'd fly into Atlanta. Price wise it's comparable to Dulles, although I believe it's a tad more pricey.

There's not a ton of battlefields period, and I'd be sticking to the western side of the state. I'd basically be able to choose one battlefield and I could really spend my time appreciating each battlefield. It's a completely new state (outside of the airport), so that's a big plus as I'm trying to hit every state of the old Confederacy and this would drop it down to 7 I'd still need to visit.

I'd also be able to work in Andersonville and the site of Jefferson Davis' capture, which be really neat.

Texas: I'd fly into either Houston or San Antonio, as they're roughly the same price and it's just as cheap as heading to Philadelphia.

Having been down there recently, I have a pretty good idea of traffic conditions, so I know what to expect driving through it.

It like Pennsylvania has the potential for most wars to hit in a trip: Texas Revolution, Mexican-American War and Civil War. Since I'll be by myself, I can actually do a much better job at focusing the trip and get more in unlike last month when I was down there (but I'm probably going to keep it simple and might just focus on the Revolution). I can also hit this time a lot of stuff I wanted to, even if not all.

So, my good friends, vote away and decide where my trip next month will take me!

I've driven in Houston, Atlanta, Memphis, Chicago and Los Angeles and numerous other areas. Philadelphia and Baltimore are no worse than those areas. The one area I would avoid would be DC, not from a safety standpoint, but from the volume of traffic which can leave you stuck for considerable periods of time.

I drove through Houston and Dallas twice in two days, and didn't have any troubles. Except for a twenty foot stretch of highway that was road construction that left us at a crawl for an hour. 🤦‍♂️

So if Philadelphia and Baltimore isn't much worse, then might reconsider getting a car for the week.

Check your routes for traffic work. Some of us from Pennsylvania consider the orange traffic cone to be the state flower and a harbinger of spring.

Sounds like you will be driving if you go to Virginia. Antietam and Gettysburg (and Harpers Ferry) are easy drives from Dulles. I have done that a few times myself.

The Valley is likewise easily accessible from Dulles.

That's the plan. I'll be avoiding Washington D.C. itself because of what's already been said about the traffic conditions there, but driving will be my plan.

If it was me I'd chose one major site and really immerse myself in that. Gettysburg would be perfect for that. There are many things to see and all are close to each other.

Thus my affinity with the trails. I love walking battlefield trails, and sure, I get shutter-buggy with everything, but it's the ability to let the imagination run wild that I really love. One of my most visceral experiences with it was Gettysburg as a 12 year old and Bentonville back in 2020.

Jamieva does have a great suggestion, a tour I took many years ago. Two of the best Civil War sites to visit has to be Antietam and Gettysburg. Upstate New York doesn't have any notable civil war sites but there are several French & Indian (Fort Niagara & Fort Ticonderoga), American Revolution (Saratoga, Oriskany & Fort Stanwix) and War of 1812 (Battles of Chippawa, Lundy's' Lane both in Canada, Sackets Harbor and Capture of Fort Niagara) sites plus many more.
Good hunting.

Chattanooga is not a possibility? Lotta Civil War bang for the buck there and very close by.

Visiting, yes but not flying in. It's $400 even with the credit applied, which is more than the others.

5 days if you flew into Dulles.

2 days you could do all 4 major battlefields around Fredericksburg.
2 days for gettysburg
1 day Antietam

Driving distances of these are all doable even though they are in different states

I'd probably throw Monacacy into it if I go to Antietam. Spend a little bit of time there.

Saratoga I had a great-great-great-great cousin who serves there. Chippawa and Lundy's Lane I'd like to eventually hit, but I ain't got no passport. lol

Based on your remarks, I voted Georgia, always good to check off new states.

Would add if doing Altanta and south, Pensacola or Mobile wouldn't necessarily be outside realm of possiblity, probally 5-6 hr drives from Atlanta that other sites could be fit into a meandering several day journey
