Found a nice US box plate. I was so excited when I first saw it ! Then I saw the damage… I was so disappointed I almost passed on the buckle. But it was very respectably priced so I took it home! I had to purchase at that price! I started thinking what happened to the buckle, what I hope it was part of a civil war relic display. Made from battlefield pick up relics. You can see one hook on the back is bent into the lead, the other is cleanly cut off and the base of the lead filling. The iron hooks show a layer of rust. Leading me to believe this buckle had some long ground action. But who knows? This could have been used as a fishing weight for all we know?! It's had many decades to been tampered with!! But I'll be honest I hope it was Francis Bannermann that drilled those holes! 🤣 all in all love my newest find!!

I think you are spot on with it being part of a relics board as back in the early days of relic displays they did not want anything walking off and 3 nails on each side would insure that.

I'm so happy that you got the box plate. It's always exciting to add to the collection.
