Newbie Looking for Equipment

Hello, guys and gals! I'm a very new reenactor, from the borderlands in Kentucky.

I've literally only just started, buying a confederate uniform and participating the same day. I love it! But, I'm naturally very timid about borrowing equipment from fellow reenactors in my group--even though they offered, and I known I need the stuff to be involved.

That being said, I'm close to having all of my kit. The only things I absolutely NEED right now are appropriate cap and cartridge boxes; that last one with or without a plate.

AND the most important thing, a musket. Specifically, any good, used Armi Sport, Enfield or Springfield 3 Band musket.

If anybody has any leads on one that could fit into a budget, let me know. I'm waiting on my approval from the webmaster, so reach me here, or with my account, blitzkrieg1918.

Welcome!

Instead of buying a cap it might be a good idea to get a black felt hat. They were much more common (a generalization- check with your unit) than caps throughout the war. Just make sure it's 100% wool. They can be mighty cheap ($5-10) if you look in the right places (ie. not sutlers/ ACW reenacting suppliers). Don't get a floppy "hillbilly hat". Here's an article that discusses in detail the supply and minutae of such headgear:

that will help you make it more authentic. Under the tab "free article downloads" is another good article entitled "Topping off Your Impression" by the same author, who is a noted authority on the subject of CS uniform.

I'm letting go of some of my stuff- shell jackets, pants, cap, leather goods. Check the classified board.

welcome to the program. I'm with 63rd Tennessee Inf CS near Morristown. We usually visit Cumberland Gap at least once a year & I expect we'll be joining a lot of folks for Perryville in October 2016. You'll be a veteran by then.

You have come to the right place for the questions,

There is no one place to find where you are welcome and comfortable. You have to go out and look for it.

Talk with guys in your Unit.....Research what types of gear, etc a REAL person in that Unit would have had....Shop around for QUALITY!!......If the guys are willing to loan you gear until you can get what you need, it is because they WANT to loan you things, they are glad to have you with them, and you must be a decent feller for them to make the offer.....As such, they would be pleased and proud to let you borrow their stuff, just take care of it for them!!.....I, personally, would be afraid of someone who would refuse me letting them borrow something.....it would tell me that they really aren't all that interested in joining......(just a thought)
Good luck!!
