You may have heard shouts of JOY yesterday. My two new toys from RIA arrived. I got a Burnside Model 5 (I have a model 2 and a model 4); so inching my way to one of each. I got a 1st model Gwyn and Campbell produced in my home town. I already have a late 2nd model G&C so this works in nicely. The serial # on the Gwyn is 371 so there are only a handful of cavalry regiments that would have received it. Does anybody know who to contact in the National Archives? I know I will have to go and look but I am not sure where

Very Nice, Congratulations.

Very Nice. What is the serial # on the Burnside. Does the G&C have the cartouche's on the stock and the inspectors mark under the barrel.

ucvrelics,
The book on the G & C was written by the late Thomas B. Rentschler of Hamilton, Ohio. He makes no mention of inspection marks of any kind for the Type 1, Long Model until near the end of the of the serial number range. Since mine is an early number it is not surprising that there is none. Only the the serial numbers are on the bottom of the piece- 371 - and they all match. As for the cartouche (and metal inspection marks)they show up on the Type 2. My type two has some handsome, crisp marks. My Type 1 has seen some service. There is a little wear dimple behind where the slide bar ring would contact the stock so perhaps there are inspection marks but I have not found them yet.
The serial #s for my Burnside 2 is 1887 out of 2166; but w/out inspection marks which lead me to believe it may have been sold on the commercial market.
My 4th model Burnside is # 7289 out of a possible 6938 starting, probably, with serial number 4100 or so.
My newest is serial numb 19039 in an estimated low serial #of 11,534 and a high serial number of 38,749 for the 5th Model run.
I hope that answers your questions. Without my books I would know nothing. Now its just next to nothing. H
