NF New to this

Hello all. I have been fascinated by the Civil War since I was a kid and first saw the movie Gettysburg and then the actual historical Gettysburg battlefield a few years later. However, I have never read many in depth books on the subject. Where should I start? I could use a top 5 good books to start with. Obviously there are hundreds of books, but I have to start somewhere.

It is as good a place to start as any, and what I meant by dated was that it was written in 1988.

Welcome from Missouri. I can't recommend any comprehensive books because they tend to be a real slog for me. I much prefer memoirs and my particular interest is the guerrilla war in Missouri. That might not be of interest to you.
