It's starting to look like 2015 may be the year for Reconstruction to take its rightful place in the front row of public historical consciousness. Two new, very promising books are to be released this month:

The eagerly anticipated new book by Gregory P. Downs' (CUNY) After Appomattox: Military Occupation and the Ends of War will be available next week (ignore the amazon April release date) http://amzn.com/0674743989 . I heard Downs speak on this topic two years ago and this book promises to be a groundbreaking examination of the occupation of the South by the Federal army in the wake of the war.

Late this month will see the release of Louis Masur's (Rutgers) Lincoln's Last Speech: Wartime Reconstruction and the Crisis of Reunion http://amzn.com/0190218398 . Masur will be speaking at my CWRT in White Plains NY on April 1st and I'll report back after the talk.
