New member from GA

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I finally found the site I was looking for:

I found much more information when I used "Roe" instead of "Rowe". It saddens me to know that I had 4 ancestors die in Company I 50th GA Regiment (3 Roe's and 1 Connell.) Some made it 2 months into the war, some made it 2 years. Connell is buried hundreds of miles from his family and our relatives in a WV cemetery, he never had kids or married.
When I went to that roster, (http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/berrien/military/civilwar/rosters/coi50reg.txt) I saw "Ezekiel Roe", he would be my great, great, great grandfather. In our family history book there is no mention of him being in the CSA, yet he appears on that roster. I'm not sure if this is him or not, but it sounds like it...since they were all from the same community, same last name, same enlistment date, and I know he was born in 1843 which would make him a strong candidate along with his brothers/cousins. I don't know if this is my grandfather or not, but I'd like to find out for sure. Then I'd have a 7th to add to my list, one of whom I am a direct descendant. My aunt that spent 25 years writing this book passed away a few years ago, so it's up to me to find out for sure.

Welcome aboard the forum from Hampton Roads, VA. I got into my Civil War ancestor search rather late but have been enjoying the journey. As all my veteran ancestors (so far as I know now) were Union, I became a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to honor their legacy and further my interests, similar to you joining the SCV.

Regarding your ancestor, Ezekiel Roe, I agree that he probably served but understand your desire to be sure. If you have access to Ancestry.com or Fold3.com, you might be able to find some documents that match the soldier to your GGG-Grandfather. If you don't have access, there are several members of the forum here who could check Fold 3 for you. I did a quick check and see that they have some records on the Fold3 site, but I'm not a member so I can't read the details.

Here is the wife of -Pvt. Josiah Roe Co. I, 50th Georgia Regiment Mrs. Lottie Roe Berrien County, Georgia who died while in service in Tennessee of Pneumonia in January 1, 1864 also a pension from Irwin County has different death dates for Josiah,

Pension for Pvt. Matthew Roe Co. I, 50th Georgia Regiment - Berrien County, Ga enlisted May 1862 in Nashville, Georgia served till April 6, 1865. Lists witnesses.
Eliza is listed as Matthews wife.

-Prvt. Boney Roe Co. G, 29th Georgia Regiment Enlisted January 1861, At Nashville, Georgia Born in 1835

Mary Ann Roe widow of Martin Roe Company A 18th Battalion Georgia Battalion.

Thanks for the reply Barry. I live in Newnan, so less than an hour from you. Yes, I found them all and accounted for them a few weeks after this post, with help from members of this awesome forum. My g-g-g-grandfather did in fact serve, however some have him listed as a deserter, others have nothing. However, his day of reported desertion was just 2 days from his 3 year mark, which I found interesting beings how he had a 3-year enlistment. I find it slightly humorous as well, he could have easily thought "I did my 3 years, I'm going back to the cotton field and to hell with this war". All of the Roe's you have of Berrien and Irwin counties are my relatives, the others are not.

Boney happens to be my favorite character, he had over 19 kids before, during, and after the Civil War. His pension records show him claiming he was "injured dismantling a cannon" lol.
