First, I'd like to say I'm honored to be the new host of the Longstreet Forum, and appreciate CWT for the opportunity.
I'm 37 years old, and have lived in Connecticut all my life. I've been a police officer for over 12 years. I've always had a love for the Civil War, recently even more so because of the things I see and witness on a daily basis. It's my "world" away from this world. It allows to forget about the stress of daily life for an hour or so while I'm reading a book or interacting on this forum. I'm fascinated with trying to think about why a certain general did that or a certain attack failed or succeeded, and all the other "what if's".
I learned about General Longstreet when I was 15 years old. My history teacher was into the Civil War and played the movie Gettysburg for the class. I was immediately drawn to the Longstreet character (hence why I used it for my avatar lol). My history teacher was also a fan of Longstreet and we began to talk about him and Pickett's charge, etc. He even put me in for an award because of my initiative to begin reading about the war on my own, and participating in the class. That was what got things kicked off for me. After that, I watched the Ken Burns series and began reading books and then eventually joining this great forum.
Interesting story: After I graduated high school, I only saw my history teacher a few times shortly after graduation. He then retired and I thought he moved away, or maybe even passed on. Approximately 2 years ago, I was dispatched to a call of a man who had fallen down the stairs and was injured. I arrived at the house and was greeted by an elderly women. She was very upset and said her husband was injured. I went into the house and found the elderly gentleman on the floor. As I began to examine him... I recognized he was my old history teacher. After several minutes, he recognized me. Once he was lifted onto the stretcher, I told him I still read about Longstreet and the war and appreciate him for everything that he had done. He smiled and said he was glad. Since then, I've stopped by a few times to make sure he's ok.
As a new host, I'll do the best I can and by no means do I consider myself an expert. I do enjoy interacting with all of you. I hope you'll stop by every once and a while to write a few lines about "Old Pete" whether you love him or hate him. Any and all opinions and expertise are welcome.
Again, I'm glad to be here and look forward to being a host. I thank all of you in advance.
Respectfully,
Joe
