I'm trying to help out a friend. This is about all I've got. I know that Company B 7th Illinois was organized at Coles County, IL. How would I determine where this soldier was from?

The possible soldier is Isaac M Crow, born about 1839 in Georgia. He is enumerated in the 1850 US census for Murray County GA with parents Thomas and Elizabeth Crow and siblings. He is enumerated in the 1860 US census for DeKalb County, AL with his parents. Sarah and the children are enumerated on the 1870 US Census for Walker County, Georgia (without Isaac) and that census shows George, a son, born in 1865 in Indiana.

I don't know how you guys do it with just an index card. I'm used to Confederate files with complete or partial carded records available at Fold 3. Would the pension file show Isaac's place of birth? How do I find the pension file? Or do I have to order the service records and pension file from the National Archives? Thanks for any advice.

The original 7th Illinois was organized at Sangamon County as a 3 month regiment. Crow is not listed as joining at Coles County either. He joined at Peoria, Ill. (Peoria County), and he mustered in on Feb. 23, 1865. He mustered out on July 10, 1865. The first two links are about the 7th Ill. Inf. the last is about Peoria County. If you can find the census for 1850 and 1860 for Peoria County, Ill. It would prove useful. All I could find was the 1830 Census for Peoria County. A lot of Illinois Counties have a similar historic sites.

Illinois has a data base of their civil war soldiers on which you can search.

Click Search Button

Put in Crow, Isaac at name of veteran - submit

Three Isaac Crows show up – two are the same record – father-son maybe

Only the first Isaac is 7th Illinois born in Jackson, Ohio

Not sure if pension files always include place of birth. Ancestry.com, I think, would reveal if he was granted a pension. Then a file would be in the National Archives. I am not familiar with ordering service records or pension files.

It is a LOT harder to get the Union records - I wish I knew why they haven't digitized them along with the Confederate.

@mofederal and @HeroPrentiss have some good ideas. What specifically is your friend looking for in terms of info?

Trying to determine if this soldier named Isaac Crow is the same Isaac Crow who was born in 1839 in Georgia? It looks like this one probably is not him since neither of the Illinois Isaac Crows is the right age. Also the fact that the closest one in age is showing on the earlier census.

When the Civil war started,, isaac was 22 to 24 years old and presumably living in Alabama. He would have been liable for service and conscriptable but there are no Confederate records for him that I can find in Alabama or Georgia.. He had a son born in Indiana in 1865 so presumably his wife at least was in Indiana in 1865. Any ideas apprecisted.

I'm assuming you know for sure that Sarah A. Crow and the son born 1865 in Indiana are a fit for your friend's family. The missing piece is info on Isaac, yes? Is Alabama a guess based on searching or does that come from family info?

Isaac Crow married Sarah Amanda McCowin 26 August 1851 in Peoria. The Illinois Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men says he enlisted in Co. B 7th Infantry 23 February 1865 and mustered out 10 July 1865.

Interestingly there are also records for a Sarah A. Crow applying for pension from husband Isaac W. Crow in Missouri.

The list of Illinois Soldier Burial Places has Isaac Crowe, 7th Illinois, buried at Toulon Cemetery in Stark County, Illinois. At FindaGrave the record shows his widow as Hannah Amanda McCown. The record has a copy of Hannah's obituary which confirms the wedding date I listed above. It also lists the children, none of whom were born in 1865.

Here's the FindaGrave record -

So @lelliott19 I don't think I was really any help. I don't think the Isaac M Crow born in Georgia is the same Isaac Crow who was in the 7th Illinois. What I can't seem to nail down is which set of info came from your friend and thus where I should start from to help out.

I came to the same conclusion. The Isaac M Crow who is a relative of my friend, who was born in GA about 1839, who is found on the 1850 US census in Murray County, GA in the household of his parents Thomas and Elizabeth (Logan) Crow, and who is found on the 1860 US census in DeKalb, AL in the household of his parents --- is NOT the same man who served in the 7th Illinois or the 151st Illinois.

I can not find him in Confederate service records either. I have no idea how a 22 or 23 yo man evaded service in either army. Doesn't make any sense to me. Surely he has to have served somewhere?

It's not that far fetched that he didn't serve. DeKalb voted against secession when Alabama held their convention. Isaac could have come from a family that opposed the war and thus not volunteered for a CSA unit. In a lot of the areas which originally opposed sucession, like the hills of Northeast Mississippi where my people come from, early opposition to the war declined as time passed and Union soldiers showed up. But some folks remained opposed and that could include the Crows. That might explain the family being in Indiana - maybe they went because they were increasingly out of step with their neighbors?

"From Peoria"?
I meant where he was "from" before. Im looking for GA born, AL raised. Perhaps @ErnieMac has located him?

There is an Isaac M. Crow, aged 22 in November, 1861 that enlisted in Captain Allen Lea's Company (Lookout Rangers) of the 2nd Tennessee (Smith's) Cavalry. The fold3 file shows a one year enlistment.
Thanks EMac. Does anyone know where the 2nd Tennessee Smiths Cav came from? And what happened to them after the year? Were they consolidated?
