I'm trying to help out a friend. This is about all I've got. I know that Company B 7th Illinois was organized at Coles County, IL. How would I determine where this soldier was from?
The possible soldier is Isaac M Crow, born about 1839 in Georgia. He is enumerated in the 1850 US census for Murray County GA with parents Thomas and Elizabeth Crow and siblings. He is enumerated in the 1860 US census for DeKalb County, AL with his parents. Sarah and the children are enumerated on the 1870 US Census for Walker County, Georgia (without Isaac) and that census shows George, a son, born in 1865 in Indiana.
I don't know how you guys do it with just an index card. I'm used to Confederate files with complete or partial carded records available at Fold 3. Would the pension file show Isaac's place of birth? How do I find the pension file? Or do I have to order the service records and pension file from the National Archives? Thanks for any advice.
