I know more about my GG Grandfather's service in the Civil War than I do about my grandfather's in WWI.
I filed a request for his military records but I was told they were destroyed in a fire in St Louis. I think he was a corporal and I know he didn't go overseas. A book keeper in civilian life, he was assigned as a cost accountant for the Army at an aircraft (?) factory in NJ. His told me his job was to assure they did not profiteer on "cost plus" contracts. He witnessed men dropping in the ranks during the influenza epidemic and that's about all I can remember other than he went to NYC on weekends to see all the great stars of the day-Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, George M Cohan, Fanny Brice. and Sophie Tucker.
I know he enlisted 25 September 1918 and was released 10 April 1919. In May he married Grandma!
