I see this is an old post, but I'm curious to find out more about #6 listed here. My 2x great grandfather, Henry M. Jones, was a surgeon in the confederacy.

Welcome from the UK and from The First Bull Run/ Manassas Forum

In answer to your question I am afraid that it is unlikely that this is your ancestor for that is a US doctor not a Confederate one. That said, was your relative a pre war army surgeon? If so then maybe it is a prewar image.

@Hussar Yeomanry @Mike Serpa Thanks for the response!!!! Wishful thinking. I have a picture of his son and it resembles this picture a bit. However, that uniform does not look grey. :smile:Dr. Henry Morris Jones was born in Maryland in 1838 and received his M.D. degree from University of Maryland, Baltimore in 1860. He enlisted as a private in 1st Texas Partisan Rangers, Lane's Company in July 1862. He was made Assistant Surgeon in September of that year. In 1864 he is listed as Assistant Surgeon Capt. W. G. Moseley's Light Artillery [TX] On 06/24/1865, he was paroled with the army of Gen. Kirby Smith. He practiced medicine in Texas after the war until his death in 1895. I found reference to him the book, The Texas Rangers: A Registry and History that lists him as a contract surgeon for the 1st Regiment of Texas Volunteers/1st Regisment of Texas Mounted Rifles/1st (McCulloch's) Texas Cavalry. I'm new to all this, so not sure what that implies that he was a contract surgeon or the time period for that (pre-1862?).

Between his graduation and enlistment he had to go something. Guessing it would have something to do with his degree.

@Mike Serpa Agreed. I found this online and I'm not really sure if it reflects he joined the "Rangers" pre-war and was working as a contract surgeon on the frontier posts or if this reflects his position after he enlisted... https://books.google.com/books?id=z...page&q=texas rangers "henry m. jones"&f=false He named his son "Henry Joseph Taylor Jones". I've always heard he gave him the name "Joseph Taylor" after another doctor who mentored him in Texas: Dr. Joseph Taylor. He's also listed on the same page of the Texas Ranger book linked above under field and staff. I'm wondering if he advertised to need for a contract surgeon and took my 2x great grandfather under his wing so to speak. Amazing to imagine a young man (from St. Mary's County, one of the first places to be colonized on the east coast) graduating from medical school and deciding to go be a surgeon at on of the edge of Indian Territory.

Yes, there is some ambiguity there. Wish I could tell you for sure.
