Hi everybody. Just got my metal detector today and found this on my property. By way of background, my house was built in 1817 and is in northern Ky. It is rumored that John Hunt Morgan stayed here after escaping prison in Ohio. In any event, I thought this was a really interesting find and was hoping someone might have an idea of what it is. The "zinc" indicator went crazy on the metal detector and I can see a line around it (possibly from a mold?). If you have any ideas, let me know. Thanks!

Hmmmm..... It appears we are seeing the sprue on top of a round ball, where the molten metal was poured into the mold, correct? And the ball is not deformed in any way that shows in the picture. It does strike me as being an odd color. It's an unfired, dropped ball, but you already knew that. Man, beyond those comments, I am clueless. I'll keep following along and I hope someone can give you a good I.D.

Welcome to CWT from the Smoky Mountain side of North Carolina.
Have no clue, but an interesting find. Just wait a little and someone will be along to help you.

Appears to be a projectile lead round ball of approx. 45-50 caliber or so using the penny as a size reference. Sometimes the alloy composition of the lead used, and the soil type it was found in can give differing color hues of oxidation. A common type and caliber used for various hunting weapons for well over 200 years without much change. May or may not have any military relationship.
