I have returned from a great trip to Chickamauga/Chattanooga last weekend. It was my grandson's first battlefield trip and he enjoyed it so much he wants to go on another soon. I have three trip choices that I have narrowed it down too. 1. Shiloh/Franklin, 2. Richmond/Petersburg/Appomattox, 3. The Shenandoah. I have been to Shiloh and Franklin and I know he would enjoy them. However I have never been to The Valley or Richmond so I not familiar with what is there. I am making a trip sometime this year to The Valley alone or with company, it doesn't matter. Which would the member suggest especially since a 9 year old boy will be travelling with me?

The valley does have some fun non civil war things to do for a 9 year old. Natural bridge, multiple cavern opportunities, Virginia safari park (drive through zoo) in natural bridge.

When I was 10 years old my parents took me to the Carter House in Franklin. All the bullet scarred buildings made a deep impression on me. — it was like a tangible connection to the Civil War. I think Franklin is even better now that so much of the heart of the battlefield has been exposed and marked. the battle is easy to understand and the battlefield is compact.
