I'm trying to decipher some newspaper text and could use a hand.

"Our brave (Pardes rides?) among us,"
Translate 1.JPG

"Hoping (still?), the day to (gun?)"
Translate 2.JPG

Second line "And (ere?) it sank behind the west,"
Translate 3.JPG

Name of author, (L P F Co. E?)
Translate 4.JPG

Thank you for helping me.

2. hoping still, the day to gain
3. and ere it sank -- before it sank
I agree with #2.
Don't think #3 is 'before it sank'. There isn't enough room for that many letters before the 'ere' is there?

And I got the name....Pardee, Colonel of the 42nd O.V.I.

Appreciate the help so far!

I didn't find anything searching the online newspaper archives. Sometimes things like this get reprinted in multiple newspapers, and I figured there might be a cleaner copy out there.

I got it off Ancestry's database.
It's by a soldier in the 42nd OVI and is about the assault at Chickasaw Bayou.
Once it was deciphered I am going to post it in full.

I first thought Luke Flint but he was killed before Chickasaw Bayou. And I can't find another whose initials fit unless he went by his middle name.

I interpret the message as follows: "our brave Pardee rides among us. Fear to him was never known. Hoping still the day to gain. The sun this morn rose red and bloody. and ere it sank behind the west" I think this refers to Ario Pardee, the Army of Potomac officer who led the defense of a section of Culp's Hill on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg? I know there is a monument on Culp's Hill known as Pardee Field. I hope this helps?

Was Phillip Flood a Lieutenant by chance? Maybe the poem was written by "Lt P F" ????

I show him as a private for the duration of the war. But an interesting thought on the L being for lieutenant. Very well could be.

I don't think the second letter is a P, it is different from the P in Pardee. The first letter is also different from the other lower case "l"s in the piece. Did you cut and paste the letters? Can we see the whole "signature"?
I thought of that too, but the font is also different from the rest of the text. At least the font is larger. And no, this is how it appears in the newspaper....just the three letters and company.

This is what I'm assuming so far:
The first letter is either an I or an L......maybe even the rank for Lt.
Second letter is a P...not sure what else it could be.
Last letter is either an F or a P since there is a 'leaf' on the stem.
The company letter is either a D or an E
