As a "newbee" who's just starting on his studies,i was wondering if anybody has access to period photographs, studio or (preferably) those taken in the field,of the 34th Virginia Cavalry during the Summer months of 1863,i'm afraid my kit needs....let's say, some improvements,to bring it up to the required level of authenticity, all images would be most gratefully looked over and details incorporated where appropriate, many thanks...

This photograph is said to have been Confederate cavalry prisoners taken Virginia in 1863, probably the closest you'll get to a field photo. If you're looking to do a good ANV impression mid to late war I'd recommend a type II Richmond Depot jacket and Depot trousers both made of jean clothe and stay away from any trim and a good slouch hat.

If you blow up the above photo and look closely you will see most of the men are indeed wearing Type II Richmond Depot Shell Jackets. For reference sake check out wwandcompany.com and look at their Richmond Depot garments. They are one of the best in the business and explain the different uniforms with good pictures on their website. Regtqm.com is also one of my go to sutlers.

Many Thanks for the photograph and information Sir!,right now i have a good Slouch (of English manufacture) plus a Federal Sack Coat, plain and unlined and a rather decent pair of Confederate pants...Cavalry pattern,of course, though they do feature a narrow stripe down the legs, appropriate to my rank, the budget is somewhat limited so i purchased what i could afford but i fully intend to work on them until they pass muster, months of fun ahead,i reckon.

Good luck and have fun with it, that's what it's all about. Post some reports in the reenactors forum when you get going. What area are you in? I'm down in Fl. in the winter and try to do a couple events in the NE in the summer while I'm up that way visiting family.

Ooops!,i think i might have crossed my wires at some point,i do live in the N.E...of England..sorry about that, thanks again though and i will keep the forum appraised of what i'm up to over here, actually,up at our local museum,we have a fully reconstructed 19th century dockside complete with a restored Royal Navy sailing vessel (H.M.S Trincomalee),built just after the Napoleonic War and still active in the 1860s so,i might have a talk about that with the Curator as a possible venue, occasionally.

Cool, share some pictures when you can. There was another reenactor from over your way on here a while back that posted some pictures, looks like you guys do a good job with it.

I can't help with your impression but there are many here who can and they will continue to be generous with their help. Welcome!
