I have an ancestor who supposedly was enlisted in the Union Army, at least for a little while. This is all I know of him.

John F. Shannon was born in Pennsylvania, about 1849. At 16, he enlisted for service in the Union army during the last year of the War. Subsequently he went to Clark County, Indiana, and married.

That's just about it. I don't know how to find him, as my genealogy skills aren't great and I don't have the cash to buy an account on Ancestry.com, at least not today.

Does anyone have anything? Any information would be helpful, even if it's a good place to start. I've put in the name of who he married along with him, Pennsylvania, Clark County, Union Army, you name it, I've put it in every search engine and free genealogy site I could find.

Thanks!

There are a lot of "John Shannon" entries in the NPS database for Union soldiers from Pennsylvania. There are no John F. Shannons. The only specific year of service listed for John Shannons was one in 1861 and one in 1864.

Yeah, I looked through there this morning. Thanks for looking, though.

Any idea where he lived in Pennsylvania?

I also searched fold3 for an Index Card for John F. Shannon and found nothing.

I have no idea. I know he moved to Clark County, Indiana, and he married a woman by the last name of Yarbrough, who's family was among the first families to settle in Clark County.
Do you know her first name?

Here ya go. I think this may be helpful:

I found John F. Shannon on Find A Grave. He was born 1840 and died 1924 in Clark County, Indiana. His wife was Eliza Yarbrough Shannon (1840-1908). She buried next to him at Walnut Ridge Cemetery Clark County, Indiana,

On memorial states he was in Co. F 17th Reg. Ind. Inf.

the Memorial site is:

Maybe this is him. I use to live in Floyd County, Indiana which right next to Clark County. Remember where that old cemetery was.

I'll be darned. That's him.

Eliza Yarbrough his wife, Randall Shannon, their son.

Thank y'all, very much. Now I wonder when he really enlisted, and if it was the last year of the war. Especially if it was '64. If he fought the Atlanta Campaign, (My Backyard), the he would've fought alongside my ancestor in the 65th Indiana as well, most likely.

That is the only service related document I could find at fold3.

My 3rd gen great-grandfather John Scudder was a Surgeon in the 65th Indiana. I actually have some letters he wrote to his wife my 3rd gen great-grandmother if you were ever interested in reading them. They talk about the movements of the 65th Indiana somewhat although it would have been in 1863 and very early 1864. I believe he got out of the 65th not long into 1864.

If he enlisted in 1865 he would've been 24 or 25 and this is where he would've been:

"...Moved to Nashville, Tenn., thence to Gravelly Springs, Ala., and duty there till March, 1865. Wilson's Raid to Macon, Ga., March 22-April 24. Plantersville, Ala., April 1. Selma April 2. Montgomery April 12. Columbia April 16. Spring Hill, Mimm's Mills, Tobasofkee Creek. Montpelier Springs and Rocky Creek Bridge, near Macon, April 20. Capture of Macon April 20. Post duty at Macon till August. Mustered out August 8, 1865."

My guess is that he probably enlisted earlier than that.

That's really, really cool. My own kin. Especially cool as I bear his name.

I have to keep researching this. I have family that lives near Kennesaw, and at the battlefield the NPS can tell me where the 17th was. Worth doing if Shannon was there.

Awesome. I'd definitely be interested in reading those. Small world, eh?

I found the whole article that I discovered John from. It's about Jeffersonville, Indiana mayors, and I'm related to one of the mayors of Jeffersonville.

"SAMUEL GRAHAM SHANNON.

Mr. Shannon was born on a farm in Clark County, Indiana, September 4, 1893, and is a son of Randall and Helen (Wright) Shannon. His paternal grandfather, John F. Shannon, was born in Pennsylvania, about 1849, and was only sixteen years of age when he enlisted for service in the Union army during the last year of the war between the states. Subsequently he came to Clark County, .Indiana, where he spent the rest of his life in farming and was known as one of the substantial citizens of his community. He married Miss Eliza Yarbrough, of Clark County, a member of the first family to settle in this county.

Randall Shannon [his son] was born in Clark County, where he attended country school, and was reared on his father's farm. He engaged in farming in young manhood and later began dairying, and followed these two occupations during the remainder of his active career. Mr. Shannon married Miss Helen Wright, who was born in Kentucky, and they became the parents of eight children.

Samuel G. Shannon married Miss Frankie C. Hill, a native of Clark County."

I've been researching the wives over the last couple of years to see if their ancestors fought in the war, and Frankie C. Hill is the daughter (?) of Nathan J Hill, in the 65th Indiana Mounted Infantry.

I'm yet to find anything for the Yarbrough's or the Wright's, but I will always keep researching.

Obviously there are some inconsistencies that originated somewhere. :D
