Back in 1974 I was on one of my first relic hunts and I found a very well made low convex 2-piece gold gilded button that is 25MM in diameter. The face is plain, except for a raised rim about 1mm wide. The backmark is Scovills & CO*Superfine* in raised mark depressed channel (rmdc) design, which according to McGuinn & Brazelton is a backmark used by Scovills between 1840-1850.
The button was found near the then recently constructed Robert E Lee Elementary School behind the Confederate lines and Fort Steadman and is now a subdivision. Numerous bullets, shell fragments and military buttons (Union) were found in the same area. I don't recall finding any household items. It could be a civilian button, but it is extremely well made compared to other civilian buttons I have found from the same 1840-1850 timeframe. Any help identifying this button. I used a general staff button to compare the size of the unknown button.
