I have a GGUncle who lied about his age and joined the 106th New York at age 15. . His mustering in date was September of 1864. Am I correct in assuming the muster date is when he signed his enlistment papers. If so how long would it typically be before he joined the regiment l am trying to find out which engagements he may have been in . The only time he was not with the regiment was May of 1865 when he was hospitalized. Sorry for any punctuation or spelling errors . I am doing this on my phone

The muster in date was the day he was accepted into Federal service. Your ancestor would have signed his enlistment papers some period of time, likely a number of weeks prior to the muster date. In the early years of the war entire regiments were mustered in on the same date. The muster in date was also the day the clock started ticking on his term of service which was most likely 3 years by 1864.

Thanks. That helps a lot
