Last month, my Michigan vacation brought me to an unexpected Civil War memorial.

Charles Hackley donated a school building, public library, and park on adjacent blocks in the heart of Muskegon, Michigan. Hackley Park has statues of four significant Union leaders - one in each corner - and a large monument in the middle of the park. I think all five monuments were also donated by Hackley, along with a statue of McKinley dedicated on the Memorial Day following his assassination.
