Hello, I am a musician with the 3rd Vt. Infantry, and am wondering if there are any books on the subject of musicians. I have a talk in January, and research resources have been scant.
Hey, Hector. I was a musician many years ago but not Civil War related. "Was" meaning that my chops are gone and the voice croaks, but I still have the ear.
The only thing I remember reading about bands is that one regiment (I don't remember which, but it was fairly prominent.) were kinda proud that their band was the worst in the entire US army.

Ten Years in the Ranks U.S. Army
by
Augustus Meyers, 1914
Augustus Meyers, ca. 1856
Augustus Meyers was a typical immigrant boy living in New York City, when he enlisted in the Army in 1854 as a fifer. Meyers would then be sent to Governors Island to the Army "School of Practice" for incoming field musicians. You can read more about some history of Governors Island here. In 1914 Meyers would write about his experiences at Governors Island in the first chapter of his book, "Ten Years in the Ranks U.S. Army." We have included that first chapter here for your enjoyment. We encourage you, however, to read the rest of his book as well to learn what life was like as a young musician in the U.S. Army on the western frontier (before the Civil War), as well as life for a Regular Army soldier during the Civil War.
