I have a question about the Mounted Rifleman uniform, I know the cavalry bugle insignia instead of the Infantry hunting horn was worn. But I have not been able to determine what color piping he would have worn on his uniform. I have been told both yellow and blue by different people. Does anyone know off hand?

Incidently does anyone know who would have worn a green piping? I have a friend that saw a light blue frock coat with green piping at a museum and I assumed it was a post war band members... though he was told it was a Veteran Reserve or Invalid Corps frock coat. Before I end up eating crow I want to know if any of you know better.

Shane,
I just read an article on Wilder's lighting brigade which stated that Wilder's men were issued cavalry shell jackets .They removed the yellow trim so they wouldn't be mistaken for "common" cavalrymen.
I think the green trim is engineers but I not 100%sure on that
I hope this helps

I believe Engineers typically wore a thicker yellow piping to distinguish them from the cavalry... thanks for the info on Wilders Brigade that helps... but it also suggests they were originally wearing yellow.

Thanks again.

I think I remember hearing that green piping identified the wearer as a surgeon, but I'm no more certain of my answer than Illreb was.

The Regiment of Mounted Rifles (reorganized as the 3rd US Cav, if I remember correctly) would have had green piping on their coats. You might want to contact the Frontier Military Museum at Fort Leavenworth to verify that, but I believe I am correct.

Name withheld to protect the innocent.

SCORE!!! You have no idea how much crow I'll have to eat if that is right. As the four of us who have been debating the issue have been split pretty evenly between yellow or blue piping. Nobody has suggested that it might be green piping. I know I assumed the green piping on a light blue frock was either a post war band or ordanance or some other leser known branch. If that's an MI jacket... I hate eating crow.

Thanks for the lead.
