Mosby Standing Picture

This is the only other photograph showing Moseby wearing a coat with a dark color collar facing and full Colonel's rank. Unfortunately it is impossible to tell if he is wearing a shell jacket.

So, I looked at some WW2 images of aircraft and matched against color pictures I have (its nice living near Duxford IWM) and matching with Photoshop knowledge and experiments my rusults have come back with the cuffs/collar being more yellow than anything else. Buff does come close, but not as dark as yellow. So, would the general consensus be that in this picture, the cuffs/collar were yellow?

The collar and cuff facings on the below jacket are buff.

It's very interesting that throughout this collection of photos (which are very nice, by the way) we see only two where Mosby's collar appears to be dark. I'm going to conclude that it actually WAS dark on that particular jacket, although I have no idea what color it might have been. Maybe his was just flamboyant enough to have something special tailored.

In the two photographs posted earlier we see the yellow appear very dark:

Based on fifty years of studying early American textiles and having examined this jacket, the facings are buff. They were never yellow.

I know you did not direct this at me, but I thought I would throw my 2 cents in on buff vs. yellow.

Yes buff is correct, but you will see a lot of people refer to it as "yellow" because they just think of it as a pale yellow. To me it does not really matter since I sample an image of the "real" color and then use that, so the color is a 100% match and not "looks like yellow to me" kind of thing.

IMO when someone here is saying "yellow" instead of "buff" it is more of just education rather than a different color.

Sorry, I'm trying to understand:
I was convinced that 'yellow' seemed very dark in black and white photographs, while 'buff' clear in b&w photographs.
Now I'm more confused.

I consider the color of first picture yellow, and buff in the second case, correct?
or discussion of yellow, cream and buff refers exclusively for this uniform of Mosby?

I agree, I was thinking of uniforms that the collar and sleeves are buff, but can sometimes be referred to as yellow. This is also confusing since yellow was used by both sides for Cavalry, so yellow is correct for CW uniforms, but buff is sometimes referred to as yellow because they feel it is faded, or a light yellow.

I have just finished Mosby's memoirs I find him a fascinating individual. Before and after the war.

I agree, to go from being one of the real secret weapons of the confederacy to being Grant's campaign manager, wow! Have to admire him for believing in his convictions.

Trim (piping) on the cuff looks dark, indeed. Circled collar is simply the result of a cast shadow. I have absolutely NO idea what color these boys were wearing. I am reasonably certain we are seeing at least three shades of gray or butternut in the photo with the circled details. But NO ONE is showing a fully dark collar or cuffs like those in the original post. I will freely admit I am clueless as to what Mosby was wearing in that pic, but he was wearing more than cast shadows.
