Morse Carbine Cartridge Question

Just curious, on the Confederate Morse carbine centerfire cartridge. I understand it used a common percussion cap in the base. My question is, was the percussion cap inserted by the shooter or was it typically installed in the cartridge base when it was manufactured? Pardon my ignorance and thank you to anyone who can help!
