Atlanta, doing what Atlanta does best, has demolished 1 of the 3 remaining antebellum houses in the area. The house belonged to Judge William Wilson.

And here is a site with more details on the house:

It's so disappointing, especially considering that at some point earlier, someone with money and an interest in preservation could have stepped in and stopped the house from sliding into disrepair. Hopefully this house's sad fate will encourage the care of the area's remaining structures.

Is quite depressing that the home could not have been maintained and therefore preserved. It brings back memories of a friend who has passed and the discussions we had regarding history and preservation. He used to say that what has been saved is a wonderful treasure for all today and tomorrow. But, don't expect that everything can be saved as it would inhibit progress. Whether or not I agreed whole heartedly with him or not, I still miss the conversations with him.

Here in Atlanta there is not a single care given to anything historic. Then on top of that, if there is a push to save something it is tied to racism and rejected.

Such a shame, sad to hear about so many historic places & monuments trying to simply be swept under the rug by those who foolishly choose to not care or learn from the past, all of it.

Wasn't the House part of the National Register of Historic Places?
With a National Register listing, the owner can still do anything he wants with his property using private funds. He is restricted as to what he can do using any kind of government funding (grants, loans, etc). If it were part of a recognized Historic District, it would have had the greater protection of the preservation restrictions written into that District's rules (and which were previously agreed to by the owner).

If the property was publicly owned, the city/county, whatever owned it, could apply for a waiver of the restrictions regarding public funding. It looks like the house was in such an advanced state as to be dangerous, and probably beyond redemption, so demolition, at that point, was likely the only option. Sad that it was allowed to deteriorate so badly, though.

Happens daily
If they're gonna use him as a billboard you would think they'd at least make what they were saying comprehensible. Does not help that the neighborhood down there is not one that many people feel comfortable in.

I'm sorry to hear about the house in Atlanta. You'd think with "Gone with the Wind" tourism and so few period houses remaining that someone could have made a go of it as a B&B long before it deteriorated.

Yeah, behavior like that back fires and gives them a bad name. Vandalism IS NOT the way to put this point across.

This graffiti was courtesy of Leo Awgowhat, a candidate for Memphis mayor....he was arrested and charged for the campaign stunt.
Gosh, I had completely forgotten about that incident, including what his name was. Looking it up, he claimed his multiple personalities did it! I know more recently we've had "black lives matter" on it, which at least makes some kind of sense.

Sad to hear about the house. Unfortunately, this happens out here in Oregon, too. Disgusting! A lot of money usually needs to be spent on restoring and preserving these old houses, and such funds are generally only available if a well-heeled private citizen is willing to spend his own money.
