Please allow me to apologise, for having a separate thread inclusive of our fellow, African American citizens of the era. Dislike using the term ' free blacks ', iew, pretty sure that isn't how a person thought of themselves. The reason behind this little collection would be a comment which I found terribly dismissive and wildly untrue, about how somehow there existed in American society all caucasians pre-war except for the captive population- like we were this weird, monochromatic, sludgepot instead of a melting pot. Cannot imagine anything more boring or less true than all these people walking around, " Well hello, Mrs. White, how are you today?" " Just fine Mr. Beige!, I'm on my way to see Sally Pink, she's been poorly, would you like to come?" " OH I would, please give her my regards but Henry Cream Egg's cow is down with udder fever. " Puleeze.

To be sure, the folks shown here probably faced some of the burden of bigotry rampant in society. That was a function of white society, nothing to do with how individuals viewed themselves. Just thought I'd put together a few of these, although I'm missing the amazing LoC photos I'd been looking for. You know- the stiff-necked, stern, intimidating men in starched cravats you're awfully glad you did not have to meet because they'd have made you feel 12 years old? Those!

You know, while browsing for photos, at one point I came across a blurb stating how rare it was to find these pics, pre- turn of the century. I'm not so sure that's true? With more access now, and things like Pinterest and Ebay exploiting availability, seems like more of an accurate story is being told? Obviously am not an expert- feel free to object! :)
