Realizing it's now only a couple of months until our annual CWT Gathering, for this week's Monument Monday, I thought I'd revisit the Union Navy Monument at Vicksburg National Military Park, Mississippi. The impressive obelisk stands at the position of Union Battery Selfridge above, which was named for Thomas O. Selfridge and held by members of his crew from the sunken Federal ironclad gunboat USS Cairo during the siege. Unfortunately, I have no photos of the entire monument and hope someone like @Mark F. Jenkins or @AndyHall can supply one!

The monument is surrounded on each of its sides by large bronze statues of the principal Union naval commanders who served on the Mississippi like David Dixon Porter above and David G. Farragut below.

Completing the quartet are Flag Officer Andrew Hull Foote above and Charles Davis below, both of whom commanded the Mississippi River Squadron in early stages of the Vicksburg Campaign. Foote is best-known as the victor of Fort Henry and for his close working relationship with Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Donelson and later, until he was forced to resign for reasons of health to be replaced by Davis and ultimately by Porter.

I have never been to Vicksburg and had planned going this year , but it looks like next year now . I did notice a similarity between the 76th Ohio monument there and the 9th Pennsylvania reserves at Gettysburg .
