Need some help figuring what what this is...

I believe this is a 2nd gen Burnside, 1858.
It looks like it has been adapted to shoot shotgun, maybe 28 gauge?

It was found in my great grandparents butcher shop when it was renovated, and passed down to me. Thats the only history I have on it.

Was such a conversion offered in the 20s or so? I know that they used precussion caps and cartridges originally.

This is my first Civil War era gun so I don't know much about it.

Thank you,
Alex Gillman

Welcome, enjoy. Looks to be a 5th Model missing the rear sight and sling bar. It fired a .54 cal. metal shell cartridge. It wasn't a shotgun. Go up to the top right under "search" and type in Burnside Carbine. You will see many entries to go through.

it has defiantly been modified to a centerfire of some kind. Has the barrel got any riffing in it or is it smooth bore?
either way it has been rode hard and put up wet. They took the block guide screw out so the breach would drop down far enough
To get a shell in it. Some pretty nifty gunsmithing never seen that before.
