Trying to decipher a record posted on Fold3. Private Archibald Best, Co H, 11th Florida INF. On a card where he dies in Elmira Prison, it is noted at the bottom, Remarks Died September 11, 1864 of Pleuritis. Effects, 1 pr shoes, . Sec S. M. R. (E) What does Sec S. M. R. (E) mean?? Thank you Jane

There was an African American gentleman at Elmira who was involved with the burials and upkeep of the graves, but his name escapes me. I believe he kept the items that the deceased prisoners left behind in hopes that their families would come to visit the cemetery and he could return them to the families when they did.
