This photo has solved a mystery for me. I always wondered how they were able to stuff all the excess material from those wide wool trouser legs into tall boots. If you've ever tried, it's not easy.
The officer next to Meade, identified above as Gen. A.A. Humphreys, is wearing pants tightly pegged at the ankle with two buttons. Ah-ha.

Thank you so much for sharing this photo! I love Meade, and had not seen this photo before.

Two weeks ago, I visited Gettysburg for the first time. A park ranger unlocked the door of the Leister house so we could go in. Standing in the very room where Meade gathered the AoP generals on the night of July 2, 1863, was a tremendously moving experience.

Left to Right are Frederick Rosencrantz, George Meade, Jr (on upper step), Benjamin Ludlow, John Bates, Markoe Bache, Gen. Meade, Gen. A.A. Humphreys, James Biddle (with OOD sash), Charles Cadwalader (on step behind Biddle), Theodore Lyman and Robert Mitchell.

So. Very. Cool!! I had set this picture aside and I have been labouriously naming the names one at a time -- I still had quite a few to go and was getting exasperated. Thank you for completing the puzzle!
