Was just reading an account of McClellan's memo to Lincoln following the Seven Days where he provided some political advice to Lincoln, in which he made pains to emphasize that Union forces should not be seizing or emancipating slaves as a military tactic. Does anyone know why he felt so passionately about this? I mean, he was certainly comfortable with seizing other property such as locomotives, animals and food stuffs, so why draw the line at slaves? It almost feel like he didn't want to anger the South, against which he was at war. Would love to hear any insight on this.
