I have heard several historians say this monument is unique in the world. Not because of architecture or design but because it is the only monument anywhere that is dedicated to soldiers of both sides.

The Maryland Monument was dedicated on May 30, 1900. The keynote speaker was President William McKinley, the last Civil War veteran to serve as president and a participant in the Battle of Antietam.
