I went through there about a week after Michael did. It was really bad in that area
Yep. Trees down everywhere. Gonna take a long time to clean and fix up the whole area.I went through there about a week after Michael did. It was really bad in that area
The wartime Governor of Florida,John Milton,II is buried at Saint Lukes Episcopal Cemetery. Put a pistol to his head and killed himself on April 1,1865.

Just be aware that some Panhandle history buffs, including Milton family members, insist that Gov. John Milton's death resulted from an accidental discharge while cleaning his gun.

Why, @DRW , this is the best you've got?
I thought of your book, reading a CWT thread about Marianna, Florida. I'll just bet the governor put something through his head, accident or no.
This place was huge mess, after the War.
. I'll add more when/if I have time!Why, @DRW , this is the best you've got?

So it was a shotgun, not a pistol?Just be aware that some Panhandle history buffs, including Milton family members, insist that Gov. John Milton's death resulted from an accidental discharge while cleaning his gun.
Proving yet again that just about every topic in CWT has been discussed previously: https://civilwartalk.com/threads/fl...-a-civil-war-remembrance.111503/#post-1085313
This x 1000000 happened in Michael's pathCompare the first picture in post #34 to this picture to see an example of what Hurricane Michael did to Marianna. The tree to the right was uprooted and one of it's branches drove straight into the ground and is holding the tree up.

I have not been back to Marianna since earlier this year. Drove through the panhandle on IH10 in route to Fort Myers back in June and noted there was still hurricane cleanup ongoing in the places visible from IH10. The debris may be all cleaned up but I assume rebuilding/repairing of structural damage in Marianna is ongoing. I also assume there were/are a lot of uninsured property owners in the lower income areas of Marianna. Might not be much repairing/rebuilding going on in those areas yet.Have they cleaned it up. You never hear about Panhandle much any more on the news. Just hope things are better for them. The Hurricane was horrible.
