Maple Snow Taffy

A photo in this morning's newspaper reminded me of an old favorite in this area of New England and into eastern Canada--so simple that one hardly thinks of it as a recipe: candy made with hot maple syrup, right on the snow.

All that is done is to boil maple syrup and pour it over the snow. Then lift it up with a stick. That's it. "Easy Peasy"! Warning: boiling maple syrup is very, very hot so don't let it get on your skin.

Of course, there are newer and more elegant recipes: https://www.throughherlookingglass.com/maple-taffy/ Nice because you can use an inside freezer rather than a fresh snowfall outside.

This makes me think of Little House on the Prairie. I can't remember if this is in the first book when they live in the "big woods" or the book about Almanzo. But there was a scene of pouring boiling maple syrup in the snow. I was so intrigued by that as a child!

I suspect that wherever there was snow, maple syrup and kids with a sweet tooth there was maple snow taffy!
