Map synbols

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

You will need to be more specific as to exactly what you'd like to know, including pictures if possible, but there are several here including myself who should easily be able to help.

If you have them saved to your computer, click on the Upload a File button at lower right. You can then select the image file(s) and attach them to your comment either as thumbnails or full-size.

None of your links will "allow" me to see anything; from your description, I imagine the numbers beside the flags indicate Union corps ( often shown in Roman numerals ) and divisions ( always in Arabic numbers ). For example, 2/XI would indicate the Second Division of the Eleventh Corps; 3/VI, the Third Division of the Sixth Corps, etc. Confederate units almost always use the commander's name instead of numbers.

That little backwards L shape in the center? I'd read that as the shape of a building or other structure.

It might help to know exactly what this is supposed to be a map of. I thought your new avatar was probably related to your question, but don't recognize the subject.

Are they something like this map?

I've looked for years on the Internet never seen any like them and I don't think they will ever be put on the internet

The Library of Congress is putting a lot of their Civil War maps online. If they were available at the LoC in Washington, I'd expect it's only a matter of time till they're online, if they're not already. You can search for LoC maps here: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/civil_war_maps/

Ok thanks there is a lot of stuff on them a flag with numbers by them , this symbol is by some house locations (L)

I've seen that on Virginia maps to mean that the occupants of that house are "loyal," though that's usually for maps from a union viewpoint, meaning they're loyal to the union.
