Dogs will give their life for a human. Fight to protect a human. Love a human who is flawed. Trail a criminal. Go into a hole and kill a snake. (IDK how) Try to talk. Kill the meter reader/mailman. Trail and tree a coon. They will run themselves to their death before they even know it.
The right breeds LOVE to WORK.
They are an amazing and always surprising creature. I want all mine back!
Thank you for sharing these! There are a couple we hadn't seen before. I recall reading that General Asboth, shown here with his dog, York, kept two large dogs during the war. Another officer once mentioned in a letter that during a meal with General Asboth, the General served his dogs their food at the table. What was good enough for General Asboth was good enough for his dogs!
Very nice collection, thank very much! @LoyaltyOfDogs has an awful lot of Civil War dog mascot stories and names at her fingertips too- she'll love this when she has time to stop in! Thanks for taking the time to collect these- I know how much time and patience it take. Worth it to pay tribute, their stories are sometimes SO, so heartbreaking- killed in the battles or finding their master's graves. OH my gosh as if the Civil War wasn't tragic and heart rending enough, they brought dogs along!
This is listed in our Archives as a boy who was wounded, can't find the details although you just know they're elsewhere in Archives or LoC attached to the same photo, or on the web. Will keep looking or may not be required- there are so many members here who know this stuff it's like a Civil War Brain Trust. For real.
Edit- Ha! I knew Loyalty of Dogs would be here in seconds, sorry to be a buttinski when it wasn't needed!
