e know if a Maltese Cross was awarded during the civil war and, if so, was it rare?

Tx but I think u r off point. The US 5th Corp used the MC as a symbol but this is not matching up with other period/5th corp pics. This was part of a lot which has post war fraternal medals. Is this civil war, post or neither? Also, how rare are the post war medals. like the GAR medals?

The Maltese cross was the badge for the 5th Corps in the Army of the Potomac so this could possibly be a fancy hat or uniform badge. I see an H and an I on it so it may be what it is.

Can you give us an idea of the size and weight? What's on the back? I suspect someone will know....

I did not see the back but, horizontally and vertically I would say about 7/8".

Letters H, I, and N. They're the same upside-down, so no telling what order they're in.

Hard to tell without looking it in detail, and in the back (is there a pin, a loop, makers mark, nothing?) The Maltese cross was used in plenty of places (and not only in the Civil War.) That I & H might be a sign that it might be a Knights Templar badge, especially if there is an C and a V on the other 2 arms of the cross. Kinda of an early:

No problem at all glad I could assist.... One of my specialties is the material culture of the era... Many times to determine what something is... is to rule out what it isn't... have also done a fair amount of research on fraternal organizations of the period out of curiosity and knowledge gains... hence stumbling across so many unusual swords... insignias, uniform parts... and gravestone inscriptions and symbols over the decades.... related to many of these frat groups that were in abundance at the time... frequently their goods and regalia attire being confused with actual military stuffs due to simularities..
