In 1851, Maj. Jackson moved into the barracks, where he lived for 2 years. The first year he lived in the barracks with the cadets he roomed with Major Gilham for one year. They shared room No. 62 in the east tower, on the third floor next to the main arch.

Maj. William Gilham graduated from West Point, like Jackson, and left the Army to teach physical sciences at the Institute, but ended up a professor of chemistry, mineralogy, and geology.

Here, a ca. 1861 oil portrait of Col. William Gilham, VMI Faculty 1846-1872. He is wearing a model 1851 pattern of the US Army frock coat with a Col.'s shoulder straps. The artist is Flavious J. Fisher, who had a studio in Lynchburg, VA in 1866. His studio burned down in 1873, the year after Gilham's death. VMI owns the original portrait.
