Lost Bayonet Charge

My G/G Grandfather was a priv in the 149th PA "Bucktails" He enlisted on Oct. 15, 1863 when he was 18. On the company muster roll for March & April it is noted that he was fined $2.33 for the careless loss of a bayonet! What was his monthly pay, about $15?? He made it thru the war unscratched and was mustered out on June 24, 1865. In 1900 he was walking down a side walk in Adrian MI when a boiler inside a building blew up and the wall came down on him, killing him.

Thank you for the info on the charge for losing a bayonet, most interesting! As for the premature demise of your G/G Grandfather.......how unfortunate.

I believe the charge was started as most of Berdans' men threw away their bayonets as so much excess weight to be carried.

Great story. I would gladly pay $2.33 even for a yankee bayonet. I had several items lost during Desert Storm but had a form for "Combat Loss"
