Hi there: I'm willing to do lookups for free. I have access to Ancestry, Genealogybank, Fold3, Newspapers.com, and Newspaperarchive. I am also in the Madison, WI area and go to the Wisconsin Historical Archives from time to time. Please message @Keiri with your request, as usual, more detail is better than less. If anyone else wants to post their willingness to do lookups in their area or online, I suggest you add it to this post that way others can find out. Thanks to the admins for letting me do this!

Remember, this is a volunteer! Please understand this member is doing this as a kind gesture, please allow some time for them to get back to you. Have fun!

I believe you are looking for this map, DixieRifles: https://www.newspapers.com/map/ click on the country, then state, then each marker shows the paper (or papers) they have in the area.

Alternatively, you want to check out this site: http://www.theancestorhunt.com/blog...-newspapers-summary-updated-2015#.VvBIfeIrK70

It's free and the author updates very often. He has guides like that for each state, indicating free and pay papers.

Thanks for the... thank yous... I love this stuff, I'm willing to answer whatever I can.

I have been asked how to locate an ancestor who may have been in the civil war. This is a trick that has plagued better women (and men) than I for many years. The easiest (and cheapest) beginning, in my opinion, is to start a tree on familysearch (free) and try to get back to a man, living in the united states, born prior to 1842-3ish (although some soldiers exist that were younger, that was rare.) If the person was alive in 1910, the 1910 census asked whether someone was a veteran. If they were alive in 1890, even better, as many states have the 1890 Veterans census which will have the veteran's name, unit, service record, and disabilities listed. The real trick is finding the ancestors living then in the US. From there it does get easier.. usually. There are a gazillion if/then variables but this is a beginning baby step way to find your ancestor. I can help where possible, I do have some tricks up my sleeves for finding them.

Confederates too?

I'd be interested in any info available on Wells Taylor and James S. Taylor (father and son), both said to have served in the same unit in the CSA. All I know about them is that they were from eastern North Carolina and that James was quite younf when he joined up and had been recorded as serving in the medical corps during the battle of Bentonville.

I am interested in using this site. I'm worried that is mostly newspapers from the NorthEast. My interest is the South. How much does this cost?
For example, were there any newspapers in Arkansas in 1880 or earlier? Specifically West Helena & area?

Not mentioned in Keiri's list, Genealogybank.com, (I believe it's the largest online newspaper archive), has about 80 Arkansas newspapers. The majority of them are modern, small-town papers, but there are quite a few going as far back as the 1820s. Notably, the Ark. Gazette (1820-1957, complete), Fort Smith New Era (1869-80), there are also several short-run papers from your period. The only Helena paper listed is the Western Chronicle, which only published from April to Dec. 1865. You can run a search for the names you are interested in, and only subscribe if you find enough of interest. My subscription has expired, or I'd offer to check for you.

What a generous offer! I would expect you might be inundated with questions, as so many of us are trying to trace ancestors who fought in the CW. If you have time, I've been looking for information on James E. Stonum, who was in the MS Marine Brigade. Unfortunately, I don't have the state he enlisted from, though I believe Missouri. Thanks again.

Keiri - Yes, that is him

For Stonum, Rank and File, I see someone already grabbed you the Fold3 stuff on him: http://civilwartalk.com/threads/uss-steamer-baltic-m-mb.118565/ Last post is AndyHall, and he has them there. You will want to order any pension docs the government has on them using those documents. I didn't see that Fold3 had anything else. Washington Stonum, per my research, was his brother. Are you looking for something in particular on him?

Bruce Vail, please message me privately with your email address. There are a lot of documents on your guys and I will have to email them.

Hi Keiri -
I've been trying to find out which vessel(s) James served on, and if he survived the war. And yes, Washington was his brother.
Thanks for your efforts. It's people like you that inspire others.
