Hey everyone,

I have two relatives with the same name, Herron Wise. The spelling on the first name spelling seems to differ from the research that I've done with it sometimes showing as "Herren" or "Herrin." One was in the 53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers company H while the other was in the 54 Alabama company E. Just looking for as much information that anyone can dig up. I see some prisoner of war records for Herron in the 53rd but don't have the access to view them currently. Thanks for the help!

Dumb question... are you sure they aren't the same person? May enlistment ran out so the reenlisted with a different regiment or transferred?

They are different actually. Herren Wise in the 53rd Alabama is a 5th generation great uncle. While Herren Wise in the 54th Alabama is a 1st cousin 6x times removed. The Wise family was pretty big, I have 6 relatives from the Wise family that served in the 53rd Alabama. I'm probably going into too much detail but Herren's (54th) dad's name was Herren Wise Sr. Herren Wise Sr's brother was James McKinney Wise, my 4th generation great grandfather. He named one of his son's Herren (53rd) as well. Family trees can be complicated as you know!

Just wondering---is the 53rd Partisan Rangers a cavalry unit?
I assume they were as I'm famliar with the 56th Partisan Rangers who were cavalry.

Edited to add....

My curiosity got to me. I checked the service records.
Corp Wise of 54 PR served in 1863 and was captured in 1864.
Wise of 53 PR served in 1862 and 1863 but there was a clothing reciept dated Dec 1864.

I wanted to check to make sure their records overlapped the same time---which they did.

His service records say he was captured near Atlanta on August 7, 1864.
He was sent to Camp Chase and then to Point Lookout.

Thanks for the information. Yeah, the 53rd was a cavalry unit. My 3rd gen great-grandfather Isaiah Boles was captured near Atlanta alsol I believe, although I'm not sure where he was sent off to. I had another 3rd gen great-grandfather Josiah Wise that was in the 53rd Alabama as well.

Boles or Boyles?
The commander of the 56th Partisan Rangers was Colonel William BOYLES.

BTW, there is a B. S. BOLES in the 56 PR. So I'm sure Colonel Boyles is not related. But is B. S. Boles related?

I would like to know where the 53 Partisan Rangers served. The 56 Partisan Rangers served under Slemons cavalry brigade in AL and MISS. His brigade served under General Chalmers as an attached unit.

It appears the 54th is an Infantry Regiment. Fold3 has files labeled Fifty-Fourth scattered over three folders.

I found this entry in the Unit history of 53 Partisan Rangers filed under Company I. There were no specific notes on Company G or H.

The 53rd participated in Streight's Raid although they only guarded the rear of the Confederate forces and didn't participate in any of the skirmishes. Probably the most action they saw was during the Atlanta Campaign, having a pretty big role at the Battle of Pickett's Mill, fighting at Resaca and Atlanta. They were then apart of Wheeler's command during Sherman's march to the sea.
