Hey everyone,

So, I was wondering whether anyone had any knowledge of articles available on either of these two phenomena:

First, on combat fires during the war, such as those at The Wilderness, Chancellorsville, in a section in front of the Kennesaw line, e.t.c.?

Second, on mining operations during the war, such as those which ultimately resulted in the detonations of the mines at Vicksburg and Petersburg (the Crater)?

If anyone is familiar with any good papers on either subject, I would love to have a look.

Thank you,
Nathan Towne

'Into The Crater: The Mine Attack At Petersburg,' by Earl J. Hess (Columbia, USC, 2010). A full length work. I haven't read it but it has been reviewed in several historical journals highly favourably by scholars who know their muskets from their muskrats. I rate Hess personally because he is prepared to take a 'fresh' look as all the stuff we thought we knew.

Attached - 'The Battle Of The Crater,' by Alfred P. James (The Journal of the American Military Foundation, Vol. 2, No. 1, Spring, 1938).

Attached (and more up to date) - 'Infernal Machines: Mine Warfare In The Civil War,' by John Grady (On Point, Vol. 18, No. 2, Autumn, 2012).

Let me know if if you want more than these. My university library gives me access to a plethora of stuff. These two articles I have read, along with several memoirs concerning (in part) Petersburg and Vicksburg. I am sorry, but I can't come up with anything on combat wildfires.

Hey,

Yes, I have read Hess' book on the Crater. I am more looking for stuff on mining operations during the war more generally. I will definitely check out the Grady article.

Thank you.
