Hello everyone,
My name is Lew Yingling and I have ancestors who fought in the war that I have been researching. I would love to talk to other descendants that have ancestors in the same Regiments, or even the same Brigades, as my ancestors simply to compare notes, get to know one another, and possibly share information. At the 150th anniversary Cedar Creek event in 2014 we had a descendants dinner and I really enjoyed meeting folks that had ancestors in the same regiments as mine. Since I don't have many personal letters from my ancestors, I am always looking to read letters or diaries from other members of the regiments I am researching just to get a better sense of my ancestor's experience. The more information the better I understand my ancestors experience. My ancestors are:
Paternal great grandfather - George E. Yingling; Company G, 87th PA Infantry and his younger brother,
Silas Yingling; Company G, 87th PA Infantry
Maternal great, great grandfather - Thomas Jefferson Bishop; Company C, 7th VA Cavalry and his older brother
Charles Martin Van Buren Bishop; Company C, 7th VA Cavalry
Maternal great, great cousins - Samuel Stuckey; Company E, 2nd VA Infantry
(great, great grandfather, - John Stuckey; Company E, 2nd VA Infantry (KIA 2nd Manassas)
Michael Stuckey's, nephews)
Maternal great, great uncle - Phillip Siler; Company C, 3rd West Virginia Cavalry (Union)
If you happen to have any ancestors in any of these regiment's, hello, I would love to meet you and discuss our shared heritage. Our ancestors may or may not have known each other and may or may not have had similar experiences during the war. They most likely marched together, camped together, fought at the same battles and had the same commanders. Even if they were not in the same Company, they may have known each other and had similar experiences.
And if you don't have an ancestor in the same Regiment, what about the same Brigade? That can be interesting too.
The Yingling's were in Elliott's first Brigade of Milroy's Division, 8th Corps thru the Spring of 1864 when they were assigned to the
first Brigade, third Division of the 6th Corps for the remainder of the war. That Brigade consisted of the: 14th NJ, 106th NY, 151st NY, 87th PA, and the 10th VT.
So, for instance, I just read a letter from a member of the 10th VT. That was interesting.
The Bishops were in the Laurel Brigade which consisted of the: 6th, 7th, 11th, 12th, and 35th Btn VA Cavalry regiments.
The Stuckey's were in the Stonewall Brigade which consisted of the: 2nd, 4th, 5th, 27th, and 33rd VA Infantry regiments.
Philip Siler would have been in Devin's 2nd Brigade of Buford's Cavalry Division at Gettysburg, which consisted of the: 6th and 9th NY Cavalry, the 17th PA and 3rd WV Cavalry regiments. Phillip was mortally wounded in battle at Moorefield in August of 1864.
The Yingling brothers were from Hanover, PA. All of my other ancestors were from the Back Creek Valley of Berkeley County, WV (VA) near Martinsburg. Maybe your ancestors hailed from one of these areas?
Regardless, I hope you enjoyed reading about my ancestors. I think it is wonderful that you are all interested in ACW history and I believe that connects us all. If you happen to have any ancestors that are in anyway connected to mine, let me know. Maybe you are aware that your ancestors Regiment fought against one of these units. Who knows, there are just so many amazing connections we can explore to learn more about our shared heritage!
