I found this today in an old Chicago Tribune from January 28, 1890. How would have Longstreet performed as Governor of Georgia? Would have have moved on to bigger office?
I don't think Longstreet would have done well. Although he was involved in politics after the war... he wasn't very politically savvy. Sometimes his words got him in trouble... at times, he was his own worst enemy when it came to responding to Early's and Pendleton's claims of his disobedience at Gettysburg. I think Longstreet's blunt persona that served him well in wartime... didn't help him in the political arena.
