Locking ring for socket bayonet

Do any of you guys know the proper way to remove the locking ring from a socket bayonet? Seems to me you'd have to remove the screw and pry the ring open until it is wide enough to slip off the socket. I'm afraid that would deform the ring, and it wouldn't re-install properly. The reason I'm asking is because I inherited a cheap .58 Indian bayonet with the ring cracked from over tightening. I'd like to replace it. Also, any idea where I can get a replacement? Thanks.

I have seen reference, though do not personally know, that the repro rings are stamped, and likely to crack or break, where the originals were steel.

Order an original from S&S. Regimental Quartermaster used to carry them too, although it´s been years since I checked. You have described the way to change it. Be careful - it will be fine.
