Is General Jackson's statue at New Market now?

No it's not on display anywhere. VMI runs the museum at New Market battlefield so the same "rules" would apply about putting it there as it would have keeping it in its original place. The battlefield itself is a state park so there's no chance he gets put back up there.

Stonewall's house is owned and operated (museum & tours) by VMI. Installing his statue there would seem to be appropriate but, as you said, the garden area in the back is pretty small. When I was there a few years ago the garden was well tended with a variety of vegetables growing.

I am not sure if it has been placed yet, although that was the intended destination. Since the decision has been made to remove the mural of the cadets charging New Market from within the chapel once an "appropriate"location has been determined (ie: out of public sight at VMI), I'm assuming it too will end up at the New Market Museum

The removal of Jackson's statue is superficial dog drival.....most of the cadets there still hold Jackson dear regardless of the feckless poli-correct crowd and the traitor Governor.

Unfortunately, I fear your sentence will soon need modification to "most FORMER cadets….". Jackson's association from the Institute is now removed from history at the Institute (at least as far as what new cadets, aka "rats" are going to be taught and required to learn he ceforth) Aside from the Jackson-Hope medal and it's associated monument on post, which may suffer the same fate, the name and likeness of Jackson is being removed everywhere else on post. I anticipate there will be very little education on anything related to Jackson forthcoming and that he will become to future cadets nothing more than a trivial figure in VMI's history, with the Institute focusing solely on other inoffensive individuals like Marshall or civil rights activist Jonathan Daniels.

This post had inspired me to make a painting of little sorrel! Curious if anyone knows who would hold the general's horse when he was scouting the enemy, or when he returned to headquarters? Would it be an enlisted man? Junior officer on his staff?

I'd like to have the painting to be horse-centric with a groom or soldier holding the horse.

Based on readings of his battlefield travels, I believe Little Sorrel was primarily cared for by Jackson's servant who accompanied him at all of his encampments. I recall his name may have been James, perhaps. You can find a plethora of details about him and his caring for Jackson's horse in the book

Well that says summer/fall of this year so I doubt it is done yet. I don't quite understand the logic of it can be on one piece of VMI land but not the other, especially when he has nothing to do with that battlefield.

I presume it was a way the Board of Visitors could keep the statue associated with VMI and on display as opposed to heading to the scrap heap or permanent storage and still appease Governor Northam

I finally made it to The VMI Museum today absolutely loved it except for the missing Jackson statue with the cannons and renamed buildings. One of the main reasons I wanted to go is the T shirt I picked up today. I enjoyed it all but I wondered even about the T shirt, did the older T shirts like this have Stonewall's name on them? They should I mean after all

I think we were there on the same day. I definitely remember us running into each other at the Lee Chapel (I refuse to use the new name) and leaving a penny for his horse.

I read an article the other day in the paper about a school district in New Jersey that's eliminated all holiday names - because they were contentious and upset people in their opinion - and now just calls them all "day off." It's theater of the absurd.

I was there today at the museum and they told me Lee's Chapel was closed and didn't think it would ever be open again

Honestly, despite relatively recent conservation work, he doesn't - far from it. Unfortunately, it would probably be best - and more respectful - to cremate the stuffed remains and let them join the skeleton in the grave, much like Traveler's bones.

When I saw Little Sorrel 2 years ago he was looking pretty shaggy and his age was definitely showing.

And why should offending Governor Northam be of anyone's concern. No one cares about offending any of us. Think about it, I call it the unsilent minority ruling the silent majority. Isn't it time to make some noise and not care who it offends. Peaceably of course.

And I dare say Jackson has a lot to do with VMI's popularity. Talk about biting off your nose to spite your face. He's the only reason I visited there and I'll bet I'm not alone.
